The present owners of The Orwell Nursing Home want to develop their business into a state of the art Care Facility for the elderly.
The existing nursing home occupies Rathgar House, a listed building, and various extensions which have been added over the years. The original front façade on the west side was covered up by a 3 storey extension. It is proposed to remove this eto restore the house to its original state with its restored main entrance fronting onto a new square / arrival point which organizes the new layout for the site. The new accommodation is arranged around this space on either side of the restored house.
The new scheme, with 50 nursing home beds and 57 sheltered living units, provides a majority of units for elderly residents who wish to have independent living.
Firstly, for the active resident, they are provided with a unit which allows for an active life with complete independence and interaction, as they wish, with the community. The second level of care is for the residents who want their own room and independence up to a point but may require more interaction with the staff and needs meals etc.served to them.
The third level of care is provided in the high dependency units. These are on the lower ground floor level allowing for safe supervision, and access to outdoor secured space.
The aim is that the care centre will become, over time, a valuable resource for the community including day care which will be open to the elderly residents in the neighbourhood.
